The movie “The American” is not what I expected. George Clooney plays an American agent who, after a failed contract job, is trying to lie low in an Italian mountain village. The village is quiet, rustic, beautiful and a quintessential Italian environment. He does try not to be conspicuous, but this is difficult to achieve in the small community. He is sought out to carry out “one last job” which he approaches with his seemingly trademark meticulous professionalism. Of course, things do not go to plan, with deadly consequences. Throughout this movie, the dialogue is sparse, as is the music – but this is a positive feature, as it adds to the atmosphere and builds suspense in this thriller. Clooney (who, of course, is oh-so-o-o easy on the eye!) is joined by several Italian and Swedish actors who are unknown to me. The cinematography is great and the story is told well. It is a very good movie.
