In 1927, young spinster Meredith Appleton, (played by Miranda Otto) arrives on the isolated island of South Solitary with her uncle (by Barry Otto) who is to be lighthouse keeper on the island. The assistant light-keeper is resentful that he was passed over for the job and to “smooth the waters” Meredith tries to befriend his wife and their 9-year-old daughter. Also on the island is the assistant keeper, Jack Fleet, (played by Marton Csokas) who is still suffering from his wartime experiences. The movie explores the triangular situation of the lonely Meredith and these two different men. The characters are each damaged and troubled but also hopeful which brings an air of positivity to the story. The performances are wonderful, cinematography is beautiful in such a stunning remote location and on the whole the story is very good.
